Why Crans Montana?

Sitting on a sun-drenched plateau high in the Swiss Alps, Crans Montana offers spectacular panoramic views of famed mountain peaks; including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, which create a stunning backdrop for residents.

The region offers a catalogue of outdoor activities all year round, including world-class ski slopes and a wide range of winter sports – while, in the summer, the snow melts away to reveal picturesque hiking trails, natural swimming lakes and internationally renowned golf courses.

Embodying both an idyllic mountain village and exciting alpine town, Crans Montana boasts an understated charm as well as several five-star hotels, Michelin Guide restaurants, designer shopping boutiques and an impressive congress centre.

Consequently, the region has recently been welcomed into the exclusive ‘Best of the Alps’ circle, which recognises 12 highly acclaimed alpine tourist destinations including Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Cortina d’Ampezzo and St. Moritz.

Crans Montana’s appeal has attracted celebrity residents including screen legends Sophia Loren and the late Roger Moore, French celebrity chef Michel Roux and golf stars Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott.

Winter & Summer Activities

As well as 140km of alpine ski slopes, Crans Montana has a 10,000m2 snow park catering for an endless list of winter sports including ice skating, curling and Nordic skiing. During off season, the glorious landscape is tailor-made for hiking, mountain climbing, water sports on the lakes and even hot air balloon rides over the peaks. Golf enthusiasts, meanwhile, can test their skills at premier courses designed by legends Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros.

Climate

Crans Montana is synonymous with clean air and sunshine. Around 300 days-a-year are bathed in beautiful light, while pleasant temperatures between May and September allow you to enjoy the stunning countryside as well as the region’s famed winter sports season.

Location & Access

As part of the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais, Crans Montana is easily accessible by rail or road from the international airport at Geneva (180km). The town is also within touching distance (20mins) of Sierre, Switzerland’s leading wine region, while you can cross the borders for a day trip to France or Italy in around two hours.

Health & Wellness

Crans Montana’s unique micro-climate and exceptional air quality have made the region a renowned wellness retreat since the turn of the 19th century – and five of the country’s leading health clinics and luxury spas are now firmly established amid the charming twin towns.

International Events

The continent’s second largest golf event, the Omega European Masters, is staged in Crans Montana each year – while the town is also often on the Skiing World Cup schedule and has been used for cycling events including the Tour de Suisse. Crans also hosts the world’s only winter mountain pop rock festival, the Caprices Festival, in April.

Culture & Entertainment

Crans Montana is home to a cosmopolitan collection of residents who share a taste for the finer things in life. There are superb places to stay, fine dining restaurants, designer shopping, and exciting nightlife – while more subdued pastimes can be found at the nearby Metropolitan Opera or the Pierre Arnaud Foundation, which showcases Swiss fine arts.

Family & Education

Crans Montana is a certified family destination with year-round activities for adults and children. The slopes are ideal for youngsters of all ages – including a ski-kindergarten and snow park for teens. Education standards are extremely high, with a choice of international schools, including British international boarding school, Le Regent Crans Montana.

Property Investment Opportunities

Crans Montana has experienced a steep fall in Swiss property prices over the last two years due to foreign owners liquidating undeclared overseas properties before the free exchange of information treaty between the EU, UK and Switzerland came into effect in January 2018. And, since then, house prices have remained comparatively low to other Swiss resorts as a result of the domino effect.

Paradoxically, there has been substantial investment in the region over the same time. Over CHF 100m has been invested into the ski resort and amenities while a five star Six Senses hotel is underway, and luxury apartments on the slopes of Plan Mayen have been selling for CHF 6m off plan.

With almost CHF 1 billion planned for future investment into Crans Montana, including infrastructure improvements and the arrival of more luxury hotels, the quaint town is hurtling towards a new era – without ignoring its traditional past.

Prices are still lower than those in Verbier and other luxury ski resorts, but as Crans Montana evolves that will not remain the case forever.
